Hello everyone,
i have just joined this very interesting forum and I am starting to look around here and there; listening to the video recording of Horowitz, I can suggest that the sound oscillation effect heard is mainly caused by tape fluctuations known as flutter, which are particularly frequent in cases of low playback speeds such as those used in analog video recordings prior to the introduction of HI-FI stereo FM tracks. Flutter was a rather common and evident defect on single notes. The same flutter makes it difficult to evaluate, on such a recording, the effects of any tuning performed to generate beat effects.
