Dear Pianoexpert, the upward weight felt under the finger when it is released is due to the expansion of the repetition spring which presses on the lever, and on the rest itself, exerting a weight on the key pilot... etc... etc???
The return weight depends on the inertia of the system. Naturally, what makes the key rise is the weight of the hammer and the repetition lever that "push back" the key toward its resting position......but the speed at which this happens is important. A mechanism THAT HAS THE RIGHT INERTIA must be agile enough to respond to rapid stimuli. Sometimes friction prevents agile movement by acting as resistance to motion. The spring also contributes to this... but if it has to be wound too tightly, it means that... something is wrong! Perhaps the hammer pins are too hard....or hammers are too heavy, etc.. Even the sliding friction of the key lever is important. Ensure that the felt on the heels of the repetition levers is not too "hollowed out". And what about the escapement wippens? Pay attention to their center pins and their contact with the rollers (more or less worn).
Let us remember that a good downweight corresponds to a good let-off weight... but as friction increases, the former increases and the latter decreases....and the movement of the mechanism becomes difficult!!!!!
