Galina Vishnevskaya, opera star and widow of cellist Rostropovich, has died at the age of eighty-six.
For years Vishnevskaya was the principal soloist of the Bolshoi, but fell into disgrace during the Soviet regime due to the support that she and Rostropovich publicly expressed for two dissidents such as Solzhenitsyn and Sakharov. Vishnevskaya and Rostropovich left Russia in '74 and returned only after '90.
