Schönberg's diaries translated into Italian (finally republished) have been highly recommended to me. There seems to be a lot of his life and music in these pages. Glimpses into the intimacy of domestic life, orchestra rehearsals; I have been told that the diaries contain his reflections on the meaning of 'musical genius' and judgments on his colleagues Busoni, Berg, Webern, and Richard Strauss.
I have never had them and am thinking of getting them, does anyone have direct experience?
