Generally, the curl is 3/4 turns, so it is always better to pull the string with a pin that is slightly "increasing" compared to the others and then bring it to the same level as the others with a punch and hammer... if instead one makes a mistake and it should be "decreasing" compared to the others, after the string has been screwed in, it could no longer be extracted.

Whatever the method, what matters is the result; on the bass side, if you need to strike the pin, it's better to put supports under the capstan, on the treble side, the under-capstan holds by itself.....

Consider that once the loop is fixed with the string already under tension, after screwing in the tuning pin by 2 or 3 turns, if it remains higher than the others, you can still re-hammer it to bring it to level; however, if you overdo it from the start by inserting it and it ends up lower, you can no longer extract it.
