Hello forum friends, I would like to know about your experiences regarding the regulation of Steinway and Yamaha type dampers, so without any sugarcoating or guidance.
As far as I am concerned, I proceed like this:
I start by establishing the starting position at mid-travel for two sample jacks at the ends of each section (always removing and reinstalling the action, with patience).
After that, for an initial rough adjustment, I use a long rule (attached here) which I set to the desired height. Once done, I proceed with a single rule.
It is a job that requires great skill because, even if all the jacks are at the same height, a varied starting point can often occur when activating the all-up bar, as the felt of the latter can be flattened and worn unevenly.
Well yes, I produce many gadgets myself; they aren't found in distributor catalogs. However, I must admit that this slotted screwdriver with the socket around it has given me quite a bit of satisfaction, allowing me to save a world of time when adjusting the damper levers... I saw it at Schimmel for the first time and fell in love with it!
Anyway, having thought about it a bit, I thought that perhaps it would be even more convenient to use the all-purpose bar directly for adjusting the jacks... I mean, once a sample has been taken on some notes, lift the bar with a jig to the desired height, unscrew the jack screws and then screw them back in... in this way, the break would also take into account the felt wear at each jack, making the work easier...
