String quartets

From my point of view, this remains unsurpassed:

i 25 years ago I bought the complete set of the Stuttgart Melos Quartet (a choice made out of enthusiasm from listening on Radio3)

these days, however, I am purchasing, as they are released, the ongoing recording by the Cremona Quartet

I agree with Daniele, especially if you are looking for a complete recording; if you want to spend less (the Italian Q. recording is quite expensive), the Budapest Q. recording from '51-'52 can also be found.

I am not a musician, but I listened to the Great Fugue in LaSalle's interpretation and found it splendid; Beethoven's genius counterpoint emerges with great clarity and incisiveness.

For the last quartets, perhaps it is also worth considering:

Tokyo String Quartet: RCA RD 60975 (3CD)
Recordings 1990 - 91, good.

Emerson String Quartet: DG 474341-2 (3CD)
Recordings 1994 - 95, better than the first ones.
