I don't know how widespread this type of study still is, but I believe that digital pianos have made the so-called "silent keyboard" obsolete.
The historical "silent keyboard," as far as I know, had modest dimensions, 4 octaves sometimes less, thus it was easily portable and placeable. In contrast, today's portable digitals are at least 5 octaves, but to have good simulation mechanics you must aim for 88 keys (today's top model is the Kawai VPC1). Therefore, we are talking about at least 20kg for 135cm of keyboard.
I possess a silent keyboard of unknown manufacture, I assume Italian from the 70s/80s, 4 octaves (from F). In essence, a wooden case (75x35) with a folding keyboard lid. Keys are unfortunately plastic, with springs like adjustable tension and reduced key depth. In the absence of anything else, it is better than drumming on the table as Rubinstein jokingly showed in an interview in his later years; certainly, a weighted wooden key would be decidedly better...
Now, the issue of piano technique.
Having started studying the piano at a very advanced age, the difficulties in obtaining elasticity, independence, and developing strength in the fingers proved from the very beginning to be an almost desperate undertaking.
This condition, let's say "out of sync," in my experience, exponentially increases study times/resolution of technical problems. Whatever level of perfection one wishes to reach. And on any repertoire.
Now, I don't know if what Rubinstein said about drumming is true, but I suppose it is absolutely true that the exercise of repetition is the only way to obtain elasticity, agility, and strength in the fingers.
I won't go into the merits of methods and the infamous volumes of piano technique, and I will limit myself here to thinking about the fine technique of trills and tremolos, or those difficult positions in double notes that require progressive spreading between individual fingers in order to obtain the optimal position for future performance. All purely technical exercises that have little to do with sound, and to quote Rubinstein again, could paradoxically be performed on a table.
And here we return to the silent keyboard and modern digitals where the sound can be controlled upstream (timbre, volume, and touch) or, indeed, eliminated.
Let's avoid a misunderstanding. I can repeat a passage of a few measures for two hours to study its sound and the use of pedals, and I would do this fundamentally on a reference acoustic piano, but if it is a matter of unlocking an obstinate finger combination or restarting a rusty mechanism—in my case, developing agility and strength at a very advanced age—the sound becomes, for all intents and purposes, a distraction.
Hence my interest in silent keyboards...
