Everyone knows that you can boost the perceived volume of an audio track with limiters and compressors, but often it is not known that there is a limit to everything, beyond which every effort to "pump" becomes counterproductive, especially in the case of web distribution.
I found a couple of very useful free plug-ins capable of establishing loudness and measuring both the average perceived listening volume of an entire track and compression ratios. Anyone who has had to master a playlist with their own tracks, perhaps assorted among very different genres, will have struggled with this topic.
