The "Caste" phenomenon does not exist only in politics, but in many other sectors, including art and music. In the hilarious film Dove vai in vacanza?, the encounter of Remo and Augusta (Alberto Sordi and Anna Longhi) with conceptual art is perhaps the most brilliant emblem of the sidereal distance that lies between the vast public and a certain way of making art. While the scene in which Longhi is mistaken for a living sculpture is absolutely hilarious, it is truly tragicomic when the two Roman "fruit sellers" watch in astonishment the performance of John Cage's piece 4’33″ (4’33″ of silence). At first glance, it might seem reasonable to argue that such difficulty of approach derives exclusively from the humble origins of the two protagonists. And yet, today more than ever, the same type of estrangement towards much post-twelve-tone music (conceptual, experimental, research-based, if you will) is openly manifested – and above all – by highly educated people. After all, who among us has not sympathized at least a little with the two "fruit sellers," forced to listen to a concert without music?
Although I generally do not connect with what is labeled "Contemporary Music," it seems to me that there are some oversights... I would like to read the opinions of experts in the field.
