I find the issue of dividing roles between artistic director, musical director, etc., more interesting.
Speaking of this, another issue that I think is hot, given the new programming, is the association between repertoire and conductor.
The fact of seeing atypical conductors for the proposed repertoire could be interesting on one hand (Muti's Wagner was a pleasant surprise in my opinion... Muti is usually associated with composers like Verdi, etc.), but on the other hand, if I had made the matches, I would have made different artistic choices. In the end, costs remain unchanged, but perhaps the performance and the satisfaction of the orchestra members and the audience can be, on paper, higher...

But it is not the agencies that bear the responsibility; whoever is paid to have the last word ... must assert their rights (by doing their duty, if competent or well-advised).

I do not know Pereira, so I will not express an opinion, but one thing must be said: Gatti is an excellent choice. He is a great conductor and he is an Italian conductor who knows the Italian operatic repertoire very well (and not just that!). He is needed at La Scala. We know well how influential the choices of the musical director are; we knew it when Muti was there (never enough regret, in my opinion) and we know it now with Barenboim. I am happy, for what it's worth.
