Giovanni is a very dear friend and a great technician. His book is a great manual that I recommend everyone purchase. He is very attentive to the charge of the soundboard and maintains that some, even excellent instruments, are too heavily loaded, meaning the soundboard is too "pushed" by the strings; too much so, it does not allow the sound to break free. It is a very complex discussion that he illustrates very well in his text.
Today the piano sound is very "compressed," meaning that part of the sound after the attack transient, which causes the wave to drop with a "curve" before rising again, is sacrificed. With a more liberated soundboard, the sound, in its sustain and beyond, is wider.
In the first case, it is easier for the pianist to "tame" the sound and be able to use more pedal for legato.
In the second case, control is a bit more difficult, but in my opinion, one has greater expressive possibilities.
I gave Giovanni a small gold tuning fork as a gift, with an engraved dedication from me. He deserves it.
