They sang because in the songs there were melodies and the orchestras were composed only of acoustic instruments. The sounds were natural and not "distorted"... the microphone did not exist, which has ruined generations of singers. The voice must sound natural and not distorted by magnetic waves.

aaaah, the beautiful ancient world, when there was the lyre and everyone sang Kaimòs together...

Today everyone "sings" a little, but it is of the rhetorical genre.

it's true Annuccia... I had never really noticed it.
I don't sing, but sometimes I happen to 'hum' for a few seconds.
And in confidence, I tell you that, not only in the street, but also within my family, I am considered annoying (it is evident that I have no talent )
the only place left for me is... alone in the car"}

I usually make noises, I try to intone microtonal melodies (in short, I go out of tune and mangle a few '70s songs a bit), glissandi that make my throat scream in pain, and other amenities of that sort. Usually, they take me for a madman

I mean (ironically) that today we (almost) all have freedom of speech, even this in some contexts (always speaking ironically) is "singing", hence the reason for the word "rhetoric".

Great post! So true. I am among those who, if in a good mood, hum everywhere. And I confirm: everyone looks at me as if I were crazy!!!
As a lover of instruments and times past, I can only say that the spirit with which one faced daily life, music, and difficulties was something absolutely powerful in the past. Today it's all complaining about everything and being constantly negative and gloomy. As an old song from my land used to say "You complain, but what are you complaining about? Take a stick and pull out your teeth". nostalgic for Strength and energy, those were nostalgic times off
