I have recently joined. In the meantime, thanks to the administrators for the quality of the forum and the videos. They have been very useful to me despite having played this instrument professionally for about 55 years.
The hammers have already undergone one shaving, and my approximately 43-year-old Yamaha G2 (bought new) now needs a good restoration.
Hammer rail, various felts/gaskets, strings (oxidized also because it was in a humid environment for about three years; they aren't breaking but it is time to change them), tuning pins of course, and then a general check-up (the dampers seem to be holding up well, we shall see).
After evaluating the possibility of a purchase/trade-in and noticing that current quality doesn't seem very high to me unless moving to decidedly expensive models, I had to weigh a large expense for a good new one against a good restoration. Moreover, the sound and the keyboard of my piano do not displease me at all, despite their age. So, the decision is to restore.
I am willing to spend for a good restoration, but how can one be sure of the quality of the materials used (I am also talking about the felts)? Is it possible/appropriate to have an original Yamaha hammer rail, or are there others that are compatible and perhaps better? And for the strings? I know there are companies/artisans in Italy that produce them in their own workshop.
I must admit that, although I have dabbled a bit in mechanics (=even though I have read some books in the past), I do not have sufficient experience and knowledge. Advice would be appreciated.
