...inspired by the great early twentieth-century colossals, the staging of Rossini's “Ciro in Babilonia” directed by Davide Livermore, which Rai5 will broadcast on delay from the Teatro Rossini in Pesaro, on the occasion of the inauguration of the Rossini Opera Festival.
The show combines maximum musicological rigor regarding the original score with extreme linguistic freedom in the direction, to communicate effectively with today's spectators.
On the podium of the Orchestra of the Teatro Comunale di Bologna, American conductor Will Crutchfield. On stage, a cast of great Belcanto specialists: contralto Ewa Podles in the title role, tenor Michael Spyres (Baldassare), and Australian soprano Jessica Pratt in the role of Amira.
Livermore's production, created in collaboration with the Museo Nazionale del Cinema in Turin and the Cineteca Nazionale, involves the use of clips from silent films—such as Giovanni Pastrone's “Cabiria”—projected onto three-dimensional scenographic elements.
And the performers' own acting will aim to reproduce the effect of cinematic long takes. The show will employ great technological resources to reconstruct the "dated" effect of cinematography from a hundred years ago, overlaying the somewhat nostalgic rendering of the scene with the dramaturgy of Rossini's first opera seria.
