Upright Piano - Damper Pedal Stuck

Hi everyone

On Thursday I should be playing in a venue (I play jazz)

where they have an upright piano that I would like to use

I tried it... I checked its tuning and it is decent

but there is a big problem:

the sustain pedal is stuck (at least I think so)

... the sound effect is sustain on all keys

I have done some research

and I think I understood that the dampers should be

lifted by the sustain pedal lever (which might be broken)

I wonder - and I am asking you - ... is there any manual maneuver

that I can try to unblock the pedal?

(playing without sustain would be much preferable than playing with permanent sustain)

first hypothesis: see if the adjustment screw at the bottom near the pedal is screwed in too far, causing the dampers to lift.

second hypothesis: the dampers are worn out and no longer touch the strings.

third hypothesis: poorly adjusted spoon rails or poorly adjusted damper wire.

fourth hypothesis: some bass dampers are not touching the strings and are causing certain harmonics to resonate.

for the second, third, and fourth hypotheses, an expert's eye is needed.

I am abroad until Dec 2nd, otherwise I would have come to take a look... (it seems to me you are in Rome?)

I hope you manage to resolve it with the help of a Technician.
