Good morning everyone, as always I am turning to your precious advice regarding a matter: having to prepare for my diploma exam, I am undecided whether or not to rent a grand piano (costs are too high). Is it possible even on a simple upright? Does anyone have experience in this regard? Thank you

It also depends on the environment in which it is placed: A small environment, a small room, is not suitable for a grand piano. Another thing: both upright and grand must be well regulated, tuned, and voiced. Furthermore, the “reponse” of the keyboard must be checked. If the instrument feels “hard”, as they say, there might be excessive friction in the action. Therefore, verify that you can easily perform repeated notes, fast passages, and dynamics from ff to pp. Naturally, the grand piano has “double escapement” and therefore, if well regulated, has an advantage in repetition and more. However, even a good upright, perhaps a tall model, could be fine. The important thing is that it “works” well. Happy studying

Yes, my Yamaha is a tall upright, tuned and in good condition, and certainly this helps. I miss the double escapement of a grand piano, but in the end, given the rental costs that were proposed to me, I decided to prepare for the exam on the upright, and so be it. Thank you very much!

(P.S. - and that the rental costs are perfectly in line with the type of instrument, I am aware of that. It is the budget that is limited).
