Hello everyone, I am only now joining the forum after seeing the video on upright piano regulation. Beautiful, compliments!
I found myself in this video because I have had many problems due to dissatisfaction with one of my uprights, a damned instrument that fascinated me with its sound but had an unmanageable keyboard...
After the purchase, once home, I unfortunately discovered all the flaws (it was a 20-year-old used one, little used and not tuned for a long time), so immediately, not finding any validation of my problems in various technical consultations, I began to open the instrument to understand what was wrong, at my own expense, after carefully observing the mechanics working, I discovered that:
- with the forte pedal pressed, the dampers continued to recede, creating a very annoying "step" effect at full key depression.
- the springs were quite hard by nature and furthermore the spoons were bent in such a way as to make the dampers intervene immediately after pressing the key...
- the let-offs were set at 3 mm (the piano has a practice pedal/muffler)
- the key dip was 11 mm, too high along with the hammer-to-string distance of 50 mm (rest rail felt marked by the pins).
Little by little and with patience, thanks also to the advice of an elderly tuner from the province of Monza whom I had the chance to meet (the dear Mr. Sangalli who no longer works today due to health problems), I managed to correct the hammer-string distance (46 mm), the key dip measurement (10 mm), the spoons so as to make the dampers intervene just after half the hammer stroke, and obviously I adjusted all the let-offs to 1/ 1.5 mm - all this by trial and error (after observing Mr. Sangalli working in his workshop) purchasing the materials and tools myself... the last of which was a "spoon bender" to be used without removing the action, for precision work.
In short, an odyssey; in the meantime I have solved many problems, the keyboard is very pleasant (although naturally a bit heavy - 56 grams as down weight, 28 grams as up weight on middle A).
I also found (on the advice of Mr. Sangalli) a very good technician (also here in Monza) who finally tuned the instrument by ear, in addition to checking the mechanics, even complimenting me on the good regulation :-D
However, I would have preferred a resolution of the problems by the technicians who previously came to my house, or by the technician from the shop where I bought the instrument, who claimed that "it was fine as it was". Many technicians unfortunately wanted to take the action away a priori, but I was aware that there was nothing to be done on a workbench and I never trusted them (I don't see how one can perform these adjustments without having the whole instrument in front of oneself...)... others instead said that "the instrument was designed this way and that factory settings should not be touched".
Surely I could do even better, if only I knew the factory measurements for certain!!!!
(It is a Schulze Pollmann 126, one of those still built in Laives)
Any more advice?? Don't tell me to throw it away because I am attached to it by now...
My technician's advice was to put Abel maple hammers in the future instead of the Renner ones impregnated in Mahogany (and already marked!!) to lose a few grams and to have "better unisons" .... is this good advice in your opinion?? Would I be unbalancing the weight ratio?
