Good evening.

I purchased a used Schimmel 174 t in excellent condition. Piano from 1991. Last tuning was in 2020. The keyboard is a bit hard and perhaps something should be done to regulate it. But above all, the octave starting from middle C downwards presents a strange phenomenon, namely as soon as I press the key, before the hammer touches the string, the damper, just by lifting, makes the string vibrate and play it slightly (practically in harpsichord style). How can this problem be resolved?

Furthermore, the B in the center of the bass clef, when pressed, makes a mechanical squeaking noise, as if it were hitting something.

Before calling the tuner, I wanted to understand the situation, if anyone can shed some light on it.

Thank you very much.

The action needs to be overhauled.

First point: it is necessary to check if the pins of the repetitions/whippen parts of the entire action have too much friction! This excess produces stiffness in the keyboard and reduced response from the action. ANY OTHER PRACTICE (LUBRICANTS AND MODIFICATION OF THE WEIGHTING ETC...) MUST NOT BE PRACTICED. The pins must be oversized and the gasketed holes must be bored correctly with NON-CONICAL, BUT STRAIGHT REAMERS. HAMMER WHIPPEN PINS MUST MOVE WITH 3-4 GRAMS. THOSE OF THE JACKS 3-6 GRAMS. THE ESCAPEMENT STUD PINS 1 GRAM. THE ADJUSTMENT OF THE REPETITION SPRINGS IS ALSO IMPORTANT. THE PRE-ADJUSTMENT OF THE ESCAPEMENT LEVER WITH RESPECT TO THE REPETITION LEVER IS ALSO IMPORTANT. THE PROPORTION BETWEEN HAMMER-STRING DISTANCE AND KEY DEPTH IS IMPORTANT.

Second point: the entire action must then be regulated and the dampers must be set to start at the right point.

Third point: the flatness of the strings, the dampers relative to the strings must be checked, and the hammers must strike the three strings or the two SIMULTANEOUSLY.

Third point: it is important to check the striking point, especially in the high notes.

DO NOT LET THE HAMMER RAIL BE SHAVED, absolutely!!! DO NOT ALLOW THE BALANCE WEIGHTS TO BE ALTERED BEFORE HAVING VERIFIED ALL OF THE ABOVE.

Good luck with the work

AN EXPERT PERSON IS NECESSARY.....
