In Italy, the date of February 14th is linked to Saint Valentine, the patron saint of Terni who lived around the 3rd century AD and who died as a martyr on this very day in February. Legends concerning love have always circulated around this saint. One of the most important ones tells that one day Saint Valentine heard a young couple arguing, took a rose from his garden, and brought it to the two youths, asking them to hold it between their hands. That is how they made peace.
Saint Valentine's gesture towards the two youngsters was a kind of blessing, and so the couple married and were happy for a long time. According to the legend many other couples, having heard of the happy union of the first two lovers, wanted to go to Saint Valentine to ask him to bless their union. A day was established every year dedicated specifically to the nuptial blessing of couples, and even today this rite takes place in the Basilica of Saint Valentine in Terni.
On this day, all lovers find themselves exchanging chocolates as gifts for an occasion that is sometimes associated more with consumerist laws.
