i would say that (unlike a hobby, which one dedicates oneself to for recreation, without this activity bringing new headaches to one's days) passion is what characterizes that activity to which one dedicates soul and heart... even when one doesn't feel up to it, even when a little voice (one shouldn't listen to!) says inside «but why are you doing this!?»
