Why Compose Music?

After rummaging through half the house the day before yesterday, I found it. Good childhood memories...

This is how it sounds... The tempo variations are due to the fact that I was going crazy trying to figure out what I had written! 😕

Yes, Daniele, it also seems to me sometimes that I have so much music in my head to write a symphony, and I too often feel "incapable" of writing it ... my advice is: try, when you have the melody in mind, to sit at the piano, find its notes and play it without accompaniment sometimes. Then, playing it slowly, decide which chord to associate with a certain part of the melody (decide whether major or minor, whether "normal" or with "inversions" 😉 - I think that's what they are called - ... based on the impression your melody should give or, rather, based on what it must express. Very beautiful. I feel a vague Neapolitan influence. It reminds me of an old song: Palummella......Melancholic and dreamy.

But since no listener worth their salt comments on a performance this way... huge congratulations!!! The melody of the "Waltz" is truly very beautiful, catchy, expressive and... light. I don't know why, but listening to it I had this sensation of being "light"... in any case, truly very beautiful. But allow me an observation: everyone knows how to make comments like these, even "those who don't understand anything about music".

I would like to observe a few things that surprised me and at the same time made me happy:

• You wrote the "Waltz" in C minor... a key that I also love, as it is the relative minor of my preferred major, E-flat 😉;
  
• The accompaniment is very simple, almost always consisting of "root - chord - chord", taking advantage of the three-quarter time of the melody;
  
• I have always worried about the fact that in my melodies the accompaniment was... "banal"; your "Waltz" is a clear example that even the simplest melody (not that your Waltz is the simplest melody! 😉) if played well becomes effective and expressive;
  
• It is a very short composition, but varied (a fact for which I envy you: your composition manages not to bore me even if I listen to it ten times in a row);
  
• You also prefer, or rather, composed it in a minor key... like me... who knows if that isn't "the path" that all pianists take... 😉
  

Congratulations again, truly!!! But, satisfy my curiosity: as soon as you found the sheet music and read it for the first time, what did you feel? How did your "Waltz" seem to you after... 17 years, if I'm not mistaken? And while you were playing it, how did you feel?

Ehehe let's not exaggerate... In my opinion, the definition shouldn't exceed "catchy", it's nothing, just something I threw together for fun. At 11 years old you play, I still remember it, I had just started middle school...

What did I feel when I resonated it? Well, first of all, when I found it again, I went back quite a few years, those golden years, when doing the bare minimum was enough and the rest was play, carefree years in short, where you didn't have to worry about anything. With the coming years, however, things change quite a bit... Year by year...

But as we know, there is a problem for every age...

Well, I saw that the experience Simone gave us was enjoyed ... I therefore invite anyone else who has composed something small (even "for fun" 😆) to post it here, it can only be a precious contribution ... I would really like to, what do you think?

well...I composed a song that is still incomplete and I haven't picked it up for quite a while because I don't have much time these days...I don't think it's much of a thing to post....I think I'll do something better in the future and let you take a look!....in the meantime I am reading a book on composition...I have just arrived at the 1st chapter, I think it can give me great contributions....here it is

I won't make any promises, but if I find the mp3 again, I will post the composition I made with a sound engineer friend on the occasion of a theatrical performance about a Star Wars duel held for the Romics review at the Rome fair. The style is orchestral polyphonic.

I will try to look for it, if I succeed I'll post it this evening... Somewhere I should also have the full score, but good luck finding that! I really don't know what happened to it; the mp3 is easier to find.

No, it is a private candidate exam... it is not at the conservatory

Only practice is done; I have to bring some pieces and technique.... but there is no theory!
