Achille Bonito Oliva
In the 50s, artists consider the work of art as an extension of their own existence. An umbilical cord links both the work to the artist and the fluent space of the imaginary to the flattened and horizontal space of everyday life. Consequently, in a mystical and absolute vision of art, there arises the hope of distancing oneself from the tragic and anonymous banality of life through an act—artistic creation—that glorifies the individual value of subjectivity. Material and its use are welded together into a single concept of art: art is that which emerges as a product of traumatic contact with existence. The work is the end of a mystical journey into the dark territory of the imagination, a destination, a point of reference in a life that would otherwise appear scattered and fragmentary.
