Wolfgang Sawallisch, one of the most acclaimed contemporary conductors, died Friday at his home in Grassau.
"His extraordinary art and his remarkable personality have left a profound imprint on our institute," indicates the statement released by the Bavarian State Opera, which the 89-year-old musician, born in Munich, led for two decades.
During his career, he conducted many other prestigious ensembles including the Vienna Symphony Orchestra, the Philadelphia Orchestra, the La Scala Orchestra, and the London Philharmonic.
