At the suggestion of Antares, here are the notes for the chorale.

Taken from Dionisi, Toffoletti, Dardo Studies on the chorale p. 85 number 1

The deadline would be late June 2013 but given the simplicity of the exercise, if someone wanted to try before ...

Here are the compositions

As I was saying, I tried it given the simplicity... there are surely a few things that aren't right...

I love staggered entries, but in a context with all those crowns, perhaps it's not ideal if, for example, the tenor enters for just a few notes and then immediately stops... it is also true that you let them go afterwards, so it seems to me that this technique is used with judgment and, in fact, the parts seem well-crafted in their writing.

There are some oddities; for example, the unison at measure 5 isn't exceptional—when you are down to 2 parts, it feels a bit thin; the movement of the parts is good, except for the alto being a bit repetitive towards the end.

Anyway, it is pleasant.

@Aspirante

Aside from finding Abate's analysis pleasant and interesting, I would add that I am not very convinced by the tenor and alto in unison at measure 3

Why get depressed, it's just a matter of experience ... after you have written a few, you will get the hang of it

Comment on Antares' exercise.

First 4 bars: ok, I would only make a position change on the second beat of the second bar to remove the sense of stopping.

Second 4 bars: at bar 7 between Bass and Tenor, perhaps that leaping fifth (sol re) isn't the best. Raise the last 2 notes of the bass in this section by one octave.

Last 4 bars: at bar 9, I think the tenor is too low.

As you can see, not much...

you say the bass part is serious? well, it's a bit of a stretch as a note, I won't deny it, but I was hoping that since it was a descending 5th jump, it would be a bit more feasible

no wait you were saying the tenor sorry haahhaa idk it didn't seem that low to me, the tenor also goes a bit towards the extreme but I think it's doable... I think...

Actually, finding a tenor who sings below E is a bit difficult to find... I know some Russian basses who reach extremely low notes... but they are exceptions.

In effect Abate, I haven't seen any major blunders... Antares did what was requested by the exercise apart from a few imperfections already reported. You also have another couple of examples... and I think more will arrive by the end of the month

Until next time

well Frank, let's just say the first version was full of errors and very non-linear aaahhahahah I won't deny it, and if I'm not mistaken, was this just the 4th? 5th attempt??!?! ahahahaha
