Interesting observation, obviously I am not at your level, but I have always wondered: "is it something I will ever be able to choose?".

I mean, when someone reaches a certain level, will they ever be able to choose between writing an exercise ... or writing a small masterpiece.

I think that critical sense increases with the years and is first applied to oneself, so I find it difficult that one day, if I set out to develop a chorale, even while passing through a stringent grid of rules, it might not be able to take my experience into account. Otherwise, I wouldn't be able to explain how my teacher, under the same rules, can always give useful and interesting suggestions.

Or rather, I have a lot of doubts... but after a few years of listening to our pieces, on one hand I can notice improvements, but on the other, also constants. Constants expressed by a level of knowledge of the subject that, in my specific case, I have more or less achieved.

correct observation ... in fact, having little time, I stumbled upon this very dilemma ... and I put together a real "exercise" that has several flaws, not to mention the IV degree minor

which at a school level would not be allowed.

other times I had also sought the singability of the voices and indeed, as noted by Ludovica, the results were decidedly better ...

It is clear that the experiment did not work.

Interesting comments and the latest versions presented are interesting. Thank you, for me it is very instructive to be able to draw from prepared musicians like yourselves.

Comment on Frank's arrangement. What can I say, apart from the fact that it is very cantabile... but by doing it this way, I wouldn't have been able to take it out on you in case of poor cantability. Effectively everything with Dionysus' notes. Excellent elaborative capacity.

Yours is very beautiful too, AleGozzo. But how many versions can be pulled out of the same melody?!

At least 7

Anyway, infinite; as you noticed, everyone approached the given material in their own way.

Comment on Ale's work

In my opinion, overall it sounds good, but you have oboe and clarinet that are always there... maybe their parts could have been cared for more to give them more satisfaction... poor instrumentalists...

in reality I hadn't thought about it, with the woodwinds and the melodic line an octave lower, everything ended up being a bit "squashed" in the center. Then I raised the octaves just to make it sound better on the computer. Effectively at that point there was more space for the articulation of the instruments in the middle (always managing to find the notes ...)

anyway it was just an exercise, a bit clumsy but certainly not meant to be performed. Of course, when I saw yours I said to myself "oh oh, so this is how you do an exercise"

Thanks, it could have been done better

Actually, I liked yours, but in my opinion, it is right to take care of all-around aspects

Thank you for the comments

I think so about mine too; had I the desire and time, I would have liked to syncopate the elements of the theme to give it a rhythmic intensification in the finale as well, and not just a harmonic one. ...let's say I'm not complaining, given the little time I dedicated to it and the few measures available... who knows if it would have worked....

In my opinion, you can still propose your own version. The workshop has just closed, if the choral group interests you ...

In reality, we don't close the workshops ... if someone wants to submit later, they can do so easily.
