Interesting monstertemplate.com, but I noticed that it still mentions purchase, installation, and one year of "hosting".... does that mean you have to pay from the second year onwards?

Free only for Xoom hosting and similar stuff. You need your own hosting service. You can buy a domain and space on Aruba, then you can put whatever you want there. Anyway, don't underestimate WordPress either. I've used it lately and it is a very powerful CMS if used properly. It allows HTML and is fully modifiable according to your own needs.

Operational steps:

1) Purchase a domain on which to upload the site: e.g., www.firstnamelastname.com

2) Once the domain is purchased, the FTP access passwords (The server where the site files must be uploaded) will arrive within 48 hours

3) Using the login details, you can choose whether to program a site yourself (in C#, in JAVA, in PHP, in HTML or any client/server side language you know) or whether to use a CMS that removes many headaches if there is no need to customize anything.

4) Once the site is put on FTP, it will be online and visitable by anyone on the internet.

I recommend making the website yourself.

When I thought about putting my music online, I didn't even know that HTML existed.

I typed "How do you make a website?" into Google and discovered a beginner's guide to the subject, very simple and clear.

After a month, I had the site online. Obviously, they were five rather meager little pages, but then it grew bit by bit.

Nowadays, to create showcase websites, it is advisable to use a CMS; you can learn to use them quickly without the need to know code. Certainly, if you do not have knowledge of (at least) HTML and CSS, they are poorly modifiable at the structural and graphic levels. The ideal would be to also know PHP well so as to be able to adapt them completely to one's needs. In my opinion, an excellent CMS is WordPress; it is written very, very well and is completely W3C and SEO Oriented. It has basic functions for beginners and advanced functions for developers in which, being open source, you are allowed to modify the actual structure of the site. In any case, you can always install a theme from the many available online. Some are paid, others are free.

Obviously, to use any CMS, it is necessary to purchase a MySQL database. Aruba offers a deal for €50 to have: web space, 5 email accounts, and a 1 GB database.

before you set out to create and publish your own personal website, evaluate.

evaluate many things, first of all the main objective that you would like to achieve with your personal website.

i am speaking from experience, because I too had my own personal website active for a couple of years

with the ambition of giving more visibility to myself and my educational and musical projects.

now I have removed it. for a simple fact: I am a Mister X like many others; I don't have a high-sounding name

like e.g. Stefano Bollani, Martha Argerich, etc., whose names alone shine with their own light! ;-D

so I removed my personal website and poured most of the info onto my Facebook profile,

which is free. Through FB you become visible, ultra-visible even against your will, in much

faster times. so much so that great names in art, in addition to their personal website, also keep their FB profile active and updated.

moreover, I believe it is worth keeping a personal website alive if it has an attached store for selling one's own works

(e.g., paintings, records, musical instruments, plastic ducks, etc.). sure, having in mind a personal website, built in your own image and likeness and, in practice, managing a normal FB profile is like dreaming of Cardinal Bertone's mega-penthouse and, in real life, living in

a two-room terraced house, simple, just like many others, indistinct, standardized.

i, in all this standardization, am finding much more visibility so I believe I have made a prudent choice... at least for now.
