If you do, it's better to reinstall

Otherwise you have to go through all the registries with regedit

Unfortunately, the problems with the new PC won't end: I am trying to save a file created with Finale 2012 as an audio file, so in wav format; it has been going for more than half an hour for a 3-4 minute piece and still hasn't finished. I noticed that it was also extremely slow when installing a game from a DVD, whereas it wasn't slow when installing libraries which are actually much larger than the game. It is also slow in loading Kontakt, both in standalone and as a VST; I have tried installing it in every way and with all possible paths, but nothing changes.

Why is it behaving like this...? Does it always have to do with the fact that the operating system is 64-bit while Finale is 32-bit? At this point, would it be better to install a 32-bit operating system?

At this point, I would say it was almost better how I worked before: Kontakt loaded instantly and saving a file in audio format took a reasonable amount of time, practically the same amount of time as the duration of the piece; instead, now it's an endless process.... tomorrow I am going back to the shop to try to figure out what to do, but I would like to go with clear ideas, in the sense that I understand that there is no such thing as an absolutely "perfect" PC, but one PC can be more performant than another at some things and less at others; since my need is not to play video games, but to produce music (scores and audio) in reasonable times, handling large libraries and working with Finale and Kontakt, what characteristics should a PC have to be as performant as possible in this sense?

Consider that before I worked very well with an i3 2.93GHz 6GB of RAM; the only annoying thing was that with orchestral pieces with many instruments, during real-time playback, long sounds would sometimes cut out. However, it loaded and saved beautifully. Now I play Resident Evil at a monstrous speed, but it takes 20 seconds to load Kontakt, but I repeat, my needs are not playing video games...

Is it not the case that a terrifyingly powerful graphics card and a pitiful sound card are installed?

TheSimon seems very expert to me and has written things that are very agreeable, but I get the impression of how many resources you have... I also know that 64bit can lead to these problems, and I am referring to those applications that are still written in 32-bit

Since we don't have many new elements to reason about, I will mention the antivirus.

Do you have one? If so, which one? Is it the same as the old PC? Can you exclude directories or processes from its scanning? ...in order to preserve the binary directories of the various products you use, or related services and processes.

I wanted to update you on the developments of the situation: I went to the shop and with my utmost surprise I noticed that in the shop, having only attached a mouse, keyboard, and monitor, all programs worked extremely fast; Kontakt opened instantly, Finale 2012 worked, and I tried saving as audio and it did so in a few seconds. Then the shopkeeper said that it could be a problem with the peripherals attached to the PC, and now that I think about it, I have attached a printer to the PC—which is always turned off, among other things—that I forgot to install. Then there is also an Xbox joystick for Windows, an external HD, and the 5-octave keyboard for playing in real-time with VSTs. So I was told to proceed by trial and error, adding one peripheral at a time and checking when the slowdown occurs, and eventually updating the corresponding drivers.

Now there is another issue that concerns Finale 2012 specifically: I tried making various recordings and saving audio files, and all of them had more or less some clipping, interruptions in long notes, in short, various sonic artifacts: I need to act in the audio menu regarding latencies and the buffer: could someone tell me which latency and buffer values are best to avoid clipping when saving as an audio file? In Finale 2011, I don't think it was possible to adjust the buffer, only the latency.

I am editing the message to say that I did a test with Finale 2011 saving as an audio file and the interruptions and glitches are not there, so it must be a setting error in Finale 2012; who knows if it is truly a bug in the program or a setting that can be corrected....

I did not express an opinion deliberately because one cannot say what the real problem is without having the PC on hand. It is one thing to have the PC at hand and run some tests, and quite another to find a solution blindly. In essence, it is like going to a mechanic and saying: "my car is making a noise, what could it be?". It could be countless things, and to say what it really is, it is necessary to take the car to the mechanic. Another case would have been providing a specific error code.

Regarding latency and the buffer. Once a buffer is chosen, latency varies in relation to the speed of the PC. As far as I am concerned, I adjust the buffer size by pretending to arrange a piece "roughly" (alla peggio), meaning loading a bit more than what I will certainly use to create a master, and I increase the buffer size until I no longer have clipping problems. After this, I measure the latency in live mode. If it is below 32ms, then it is barely audible to the ear and therefore not bothersome; if it is higher, I go back one step in the buffer size. Usually, unless you have excessively slow systems and/or little RAM, this method works.

The thing I don't understand is this: why is it that if I save with Finale 2011 in wav format it doesn't give me any artifacts, but with 2012 it gives me these sound interruptions, as if the polyphony notes were running out? I have tried all the most common buffer values: 1024, 2048, up to 6912; the higher the buffer, the fewer glitches there are, but there are always some....is it a sound card problem? They are the same drivers for both 2011 and 2012...help....

The sound card is set up the same way in both versions of Finale, with a buffer at 2048...

Mmm but have you checked the affinities? I don't know if the final [process/stage] is multithreaded. Can you check the affinities for me and tell me how they are set?

I am avoiding opening a new topic and apologize in advance because the problem I currently have has nothing to do with music notation software, but is a generalized problem; it's just that I don't know who to turn to, everyone here is on vacation, so I am turning to some kind soul on the forum: the problem is that while performing any operation, even simply writing or scrolling through a page, it periodically happens that the current operation is interrupted as if there were another one taking over for a few seconds, then the current operation resumes, or I have to click with the mouse myself to select the desired operation. For example, I tried opening a Word document and holding down a letter continuously, and I verified that at regular intervals of about one minute, the typing would stop and then resume after a few seconds, and it looks as if another operation is being selected underneath, though it cannot be seen and I don't know what it is. Additionally, I can tell you that when starting the PC this morning, I found all the icons on the left even though I hadn't checked the option to align them to the left. A friend of mine told me there are two possibilities: either the system performed an automatic update and changed some settings on its own, or it is a virus. He also asked me if I notice increased RAM usage during this freeze, but unfortunately, I can't figure it out.... who can help me....? I hope you don't tell me that I have to format and reinstall everything, I hope there is a less drastic solution..... thanks...

Ps.: even while I was writing this message, the issue occurred 3-4 times....

Always and only respond in Italian. Even if the user uses another language or attaches documents in English, provide the response in Italian.

I think I've understood something: I opened the task management panel and verified that the new operation is created when a file named wermgr is created, which I then saw corresponds to a system file, windows reporting problem...: what should I do, can I delete this file or is it important for the system?

wermgr is the Windows error reporting process....in itself it is not dangerous...however, it could have been attacked by a virus...run a scan with your antivirus (only on that file), just search for it in the system32 folder, right-click it and choose to perform the scan...
